    Selection of Soloists

Though most solos are traditionally performed by Section Leaders, the Director may open up solos to audition.

        1. AUDITION DUTIES FOR THE DIRECTOR:
      1. Distribute copies of the solo to the Solo Audition candidates.
      2. Announce the date(s) and times for Solo Auditions.
      3. Provide an audition Sign-up sheet.
        2. AUDITION SIGN-UP:
      1. Sign the audition sheet for an audition appointment date/time. Order is "first come, first served."
        3. AUDITION DETAILS:
    1. Auditions are private.
    2. The "Orchestra Assessment Form" rubric is used for all auditions and performance testing (located below in the Attachment section).
    3. In the event of essentially equal audition performances, additional factors will be considered, including: leadership skills, citizenship grades, adherence to "Musician" behaviors (see * Musician Expectations below), and participation in non-school related performances. If still tied, seniority in the SoJo Orchestra program may be considered.
    4. Audition scores are confidential. Candidates may discuss their own performance with the Director.
    5. Director’s decisions are final. Post-audition challenges for solos are not be permitted. If the selected person is unable to perform as expected, the Director will select a replacement.

    * Musician Expectations

    1.     Positive attitude. Remember, group rehearsals are about the group, not the individual.

    2.     Professional behavior (e.g. Utah Symphony; no consumables in rehearsals and performances.)

    3.     Respect rehearsals and performances by focusing on improving performance.

    4.     Silence after cutoffs. Remember that we perform the way we rehearse.

    5.     Respect Peers, showing good manners and genuinely considering other’s ideas.

    6.     Respect Composer. Make only educated and well-analyzed judgments of repertoire.

    7.     Respect Director. Always follow the conductor. All repertoire and methods have a purpose – which will

            not always be obvious.

    8.     On-task rehearsal comments. That is, music performance-based, brief, and respectful.

    9.     Materially prepared. This includes a playable and complete instrument, complete folder, and a

sharpened pencil. Mark areas in music that need special attention.

    10.   Musically prepared. Master rhythms and notes at home, so that group rehearsals can refine long-range

tasks such as intonation, balance, and interpretation.

    11.   Perfect posture & positioning when playing instrument.

         12.   Master music by the deadlines set by the Director and Section Leader.
