Music Connections CLASS DESCRIPTION:
This course meets the Music Connections Utah State Core Curriculum Standards
and Objectives. This one-semester introductory music course is designed for
students with little or no knowledge of musical concepts. South Jordan Middle
School offers fine Music performance courses, including: Orchestra, Band, or
Choir. - Better understand how music connects to and enriches their lives. - Use the Elements of Music and the Elements of Musical Expression to listen with understanding and to academically comment on music. - Read,
play, and compose written music. Students occasionally perform for their classmates. - Become acquainted with major periods of music history.
DAILY MATERIALS: - Sharpened pencil and paper for taking notes. - Packets currently being studied. - Access
to a computer with Internet and a printer (School computers and printers are available for student use.) GRADING: 10 Participation points daily. Assignments, quizzes, and tests.
EXTRA CREDIT: (100 points maximum per quarter) 1. ARTWORK pertaining to musical topics studied in class. Include the name and the details about what you’ve submitted. (20 points)
2. CLASSICS FOR KIDS COMPOSER BIOS. This must be a conductor not studied in class, and two paragraphs in length. (20 points)
3. PERFORM a musical piece in class. (30 points)
4. Attend an APPROVED CONCERT and submit the printed program signed by your parent. Write two paragraphs about what you liked and didn’t like about the performance. Refer to pieces by their titles. (50 points)
5. WEEKLY MUSIC LESSONS on and instrument or voice from a professional teacher. Submit a statement signed by your parent stating that you take private music lessons, and include the name of your private music teacher. (50 points) THIS IS NOT A PERFORMANCE COURSE:
This is a Humanities course which focus is the art form of music. This is not a
performance course - we perform no concerts. Students desiring to play
instruments and/or sing should immediately transfer into one of our fine Music
Performance groups. No prior music experience is necessary to join them and
